Usually when you read about "option trading," it's referring to buying options and then reselling them later for a profit. And yet this is only half the equation!

The "secret" is that you can make make a lot of money with very little risk once you discover "the other half" of option trading.
You see, when you write and sell options, you get to collect a premium. The premium is often in the hundreds of dollars.
Now, one of two things will happen:

The option will expire worthless and you'll keep 100% of the option premium, as well as the underlying stock. |

Or, the option will be exercised and you will have to sell your stock. This is what you want to happen. |

Make Money Two Ways...
First, you'll make money by collecting your option premium. You'll also make money by selling your stock at a profit. Ultimately, this will put you in a no-risk, all-cash position until the next time you use the strategy.
On the flip side, the option you wrote and sold could expire worthless. This means you'll get to keep your stock and 100% of the option premium. While this is a desirable position to be in, it comes with some risk since you'll still own the stock. If the stock falls in price before you are able to liquidate it, you could lose some money.
This is why part of the covered call writing strategy I teach involves buying a protective put. This will act as an "insurance policy" in case the share price of your stock drops.
Now get this: If the option you wrote expires worthless and you keep your stock, you can collect option premiums for as long as you own the stock!

Let's say you own GOOG stock and you decide to write covered calls against it.
Every time you write a covered call against the stock you own, you collect a premium of a few hundred dollars. This is cash in your pocket.
